The short version

Snapfind works entirely on your Mac. Your screenshots, the text recognised in them and the search index never leave it. Two features use the network, and both are optional and off until you turn them on: encrypted backup of your settings, and anonymous usage stats. Snapfind never sells any information.

What Snapfind reads

Snapfind reads image files in the folders you choose so it can recognise the text in them. Recognition uses Apple's Vision framework, which runs on your Mac.

What Snapfind stores

A search index of the recognised text, file paths, dates and image sizes, stored at ~/Library/Application Support/Snapfind/.
Your settings (chosen folders and preferences), stored in the standard macOS preferences for the app.

You can delete all of this from Settings › Privacy & Data › “Delete All Snapfind Data”, or by deleting that folder.

What Snapfind sends

With backup and stats both off (the default), nothing: Snapfind makes no network connections. There is no advertising or tracking.

Optional encrypted backup (Settings › Backup)

You sign in with your email address, which is used only to send a one-time sign-in code.
Your settings (the shortcut and menu bar preferences) and the list of folders each of your Macs searches are encrypted on your Mac with a key protected by your passphrase, then uploaded. We store only the scrambled data and can't read it.
Never uploaded: your screenshots, their recognised text, the search index, and folder permissions.
What the server can still see: that you have an account (your email), how many items you store and how big they are, when they change, and the names of the devices you sign in on.
If you forget your passphrase and lose your recovery key, your backup can't be recovered, by you or by us.
You can sign a Mac out, sign out other devices, or delete the backup and account from Settings › Backup at any time.

Optional anonymous stats (Settings › Backup)

Off by default and separate from backup. Once a day Snapfind sends a random install ID made only for this purpose (never linked to your account), the app version and how many times it quit unexpectedly. The server stores a hash of the install ID and no IP addresses.

Your files

Snapfind only reads your images. It never modifies, moves, uploads or deletes them. It doesn't download files that iCloud has moved off your Mac.
